TECUMSEH – Bedford’s Brendan Hammer had never pitched in a varsity game before.
“He had never even thrown in practice,” Mules coach Craig Trychel said.

But Bedford was out of arms in the second game of a doubleheader against Tecumseh Saturday after playing two games the night before.
Trychel told his players that someone was going to have to step up for the team.
Hammer was ready.
The junior was summoned with the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning and his team nursing a 1-run lead. He induced a weak pop up to preserve a 9-8 Bedford win and earn a save.
“He was up for the challenge,” Trychel said.
The Mules also won the first game 7-2 and now own an 11-1 record.
“We’ve played pretty good baseball,” Trychel said. “They’ve done what they needed to do and we’ve been a little bit lucky.”
Tyler Ripple was strong on the mound in the first game with eight strikeouts.
Brady Pridgeon went 2-for-4 and Luke Carver doubled and drove in two runs.
The win in Game 2 went to Adan Reed, and Ethan Brickner also threw well. Carver went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI, Joey Nagle, Brickner and Noah Weiher each had two hits and Chace Cingle tripled.
Milan puts ball in play
MILAN – You won’t hear the hitters for Milan’s baseball team talking about exit velocity or launch angle.
Big Reds’ coach Adam Gilles recently talked to his team about what the obsession with home runs is doing to Major League Baseball.
“What we’re talking about is putting the ball in play and not striking out,” Gilles said. “Strikeouts are easy. When you put the ball in play, things happen.”
Lots of things have been happening for Milan this season.
The Big Reds are off to an 11-1 start after sweeping Ida 9-2 and 12-9 Saturday.
A lot of that has to do with putting the ball in play. Milan hitters struck out just four times in the two games Saturday.
“Our pitching has been pretty solid, but more surprisingly our hitters have really been putting the ball in play and making adjustments,” Gilles said.
Luke Gebhardt and Mason Summerville were the winning pitchers Saturday. Jett Isaacs and Evan Morelock led the offense with four hits each, while Hunter Osborne logged three and Ryder Knox and Dylan Beck two each.
Tim Stapleton, Gavin Kruise and Jaxom Morawski played well.
PREP BASEBALL: Freshman takes the lead for Whiteford against Ida
Evan Bonk led the Ida offense with six hits, Aaron Dean had five and Jaeden Gianino racked up four while playing outstanding defense in centerfield.
Caleb Pfeiffer provided solid relief pitching in both games for the 3-6 Blue Streaks.
Bears win opener
TRENTON – Ryan Gennoe and Drew Huffman had three hits each as Jefferson won the first game of a doubleheader against Trenton 11-7 Saturday.
Collin Young picked up a save in relief of Logan Tackett.
Livonia Franklin beat the Bears 15-0 in the second game.
Huron sweeps Jaguars
ALLEN PARK – Rory Callahan and Matt Williams collected five hits and Brenden Pasut drove in the winning run in the second game as New Boston Huron beat Allen Park 10-5 and 8-7 Saturday.
Micah Smith got the win in the first game and Jayden Craig was the Game 2 winner with Chase Molnar earning a save.
Molnar had four hits for the day.
Sieler, LaBeau strong
ADRIAN – Ryan Sieler gave up just one hit and struck out 10 over five innings, then Garrett LaBeau pitched the sixth as Monroe shut out Adrian 10-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Caleb Winkelman (3-for-4, 2 runs), Ashton Elmer (2-for-4, 3 runs), and Noah Miller (2-for-2, 4 RBI) led the offense. Monroe did not commit an error.
Adrian scored four times in the seventh inning to nip the Trojans 7-6 in the second game.
Elmer, Kellen Roberts and Blake Lambert had two hits each for Monroe.
Daniels leads Airport
BLISSFIELD – Shade Daniels went 5-for-7, but Airport (4-5) didn’t muster much other offense in falling 3-2 to Blissfield and 9-2 to Lakeland in Saturday’s Blissfield Tournament.
Jason Himebaugh pitched well in the first game, which Blissfield won in the seventh inning on a walk-off hit by winning pitcher Gavin Ganun.
