A school bus transporting summer school students home from Jonesville Elementary overturned onto its side and blocked both lanes of traffic on Rena Road in the Jonesville area Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3:20 p.m. between U.S. 21 and Swan Creek Road.
The bus was carrying 26 students, according to Yadkin County Schools Superintendent Todd Martin. Five children were transported to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem as a precaution, he said. The other children were taken back to the school, where they were picked up by their parents.
Yadkin County Emergency Services Director Keith Vestal, who assisted at the scene, said the injured students appeared to have sustained minor injuries and were walking around.
“I want to brag on our people,” Martin said. “We had several school employees who came to the scene to sit with the students. Several students were understandably upset and our people sat with them and talked to them and kept them calm.”
