On Feb. 16, a ripple spread around the waters of Captiva and Sanibel as islanders heard the news of the transference of ownership of Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina, the Captiva Island Historical Society reported. The historic cottages and marina were known as the last bastion of “old Captiva” and had the Jensen family’s steadfast protection of that institution.
That ripple soon became a tidal wave as, only four days after the sale of the family’s business, word spread of the unexpected death of Dave Jensen. The eldest of the Jensen “boys” had moved to Italy in 2019, yet his hearty laugh, larger-than-life personality and community good works seemed to remain.
Those who knew Jensen mourned for his wife, Queenie, and for the family. Many in the community also bemoaned the passing of an era and found themselves wondering, “What will we do now?”
The CIHS Board of Directors announced that it has begun production of a feature-length documentary chronicling Twin Palm, the contribution the family has made to Captiva, and the many ways Jensen and his family will long remain a part of the island’s memories. It will premiere during the 2022-23 season.
The Jensens have been a colorful part of Captiva’s narrative for more than 45 years. As co-founder of the CIHS, Jensen remained an active director on the board, even after moving to Italy, it reported.
His dedication came as no surprise to those who knew him. Jensen not only loved his community, he championed Captiva history. The family has contributed to the CIHS each year since its 2010 start.
The CIHS has created a Dave Jensen Memorial Fund to help underwrite the production of the new documentary. To make a donation in his memory, visit www.captivaislandhistoricalsociety.org.
Donations by check can be made payable to the Captiva Island Historical Society, with “Dave Jensen Memorial Fund” written in the memo line, and mailed to CIHS, P.O. Box 163, Captiva, FL 33924.
