President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that Iran has banned energy-intensive crypto mining such as Bitcoin for nearly four months as Iran faces major power outages in many cities.
“The ban on cryptocurrency mining is valid until September 22 … about 85% of the current mining in Iran is unlicensed,” Rouhani said in a television speech at the Council of Ministers. ..

According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, about 4.5% of all Bitcoin mining is done in Iran, earning hundreds of millions of dollars from cryptocurrencies that can be used to mitigate the effects of US sanctions.
