Meet V S Sabu, an amateur scientist from Thiruvananthapuram, whose scientific videos are going viral on the internet for all the right reasons. His latest invention, a Tesla coil, has already garnered close to four million views.
Just like 3 Idiots’ ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’, VS Sabu runs a small science experiment lab in Thiruvananthapuram, where a lot of students come to learn about his scientific models.
Speaking to India Today, Sabu said that he created a new type of solid-state — Tesla coil — during the first lockdown in 2020. Tesla coil, which converts 2kW with an input voltage of 230V into an output of 300kV, is controlled using a semiconductor called IGBT or an insulated-gate bipolar transistor.
In the viral video, the blade rotates by the propulsion of ion molecules, which generates high voltage, and the LED bulb that is held near the coil will light up when the electricity transfers into the bulb from the coil.
What is Tesla Coil?
Tesla coils are wireless energy generators, but not suitable for commercial applications as wired transmission. It is more efficient than wireless energy from the Tesla coil. A Tesla coil needs a high-voltage power source and consists of two parts, a primary coil and a secondary coil, each with its own capacitor.

Tribute to Nikola Tesla
VS Sabu said that his model is a tribute to Nikola Tesla, one of the pioneering scientists of the 19th century. Tesla coil was invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891, which worked on the spark gap technology.
In 1987, VS Sabu had designed and developed an educational robot that could perform multiple activities. Sabu claims that he had developed the first autonomous robot in India. His work was complemented by the office of then Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi and the Technical Department of Education, Kerala.
