MERIDEN — The Police Department has promoted six members since January and assigned a new public information officer.
There was a ceremony previously for some of the recently promoted officers, including the two new deputy chiefs, Jeremiah Scully and Nicholas Sherwood.
“One promotion at the top can ripple through the department,” City Manager Timothy Coon said. “There is a career progression for officers who choose that path.”
The promotions also include Capt. John Mennone, who was made a captain, Darrin McKay and Hector Cardona, who became lieutenants, and Jason DeGumbia, who was made a corporal.
Chief Roberto Rosado said when making promotions he considers a candidate’s respect for leadership, fellow officers and most importantly — the community.
“These individuals recently promoted have all of that,” Rosado said. “They have many, many years of experience…”
In another change, Sgt. Michael Boothroyd moved from the patrol division to Internal Affairs on April 19, also becoming the department’s new public information officer. Boothroyd joined the department in 2000, left briefly in 2005, then returned in 2008. He spent most of his time on the overnight shift, but switched to the day shift last May. He said the public information role was part of his training for Internal Affairs.
“It’s a new opportunity at the administration level,” Boothroyd said.
City Councilor Michael Cardona, who chairs the council’s Public Safety Committee, said he trusts that the vetting process for the promotions was thorough and that Rosado selected the most qualified candidates. He added that the department is working on hiring more officers, which is a long process.
