Polka dot Queen goes on show

A rare collection of artworks by “queen of polka dots” Yayoi Kusama is now on display in Hong Kong before being auctioned in New York in a month’s time.

The artworks are part of “The Kusama: The Collection of the late Dr Teruo Hirose,” which were gifts from Kusama to her lifelong friend Dr Hirose. She sought medical aid from him while working as a struggling artist in New York in the 1960s.

Among the collection are three paintings and eight paper arts, including two river paintings produced in 1960 – Mississippi River and Hudson River – which are outstanding due to Kusama’s rare use of red color in her artworks. The third painting, Untitled – a highlight of the collection – combines vibrant colors and the scale of the work lends an immersive quality, which foreshadows Kusama’s later artworks such as Infinity Rooms. The collection is on show at Bonhams Admiralty saleroom on the 20th floor of One Pacific Place until April 22. It will then be shipped to Bonhams New York for display from April 30 to May 12, when they will be auctioned.
