After including it on the GeForce RTX 3060, Nvidia is reportedly putting its crypto mining limiter on the yet-to-be-announced GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card. A well-known leaker who has been correct about GPU specs in the past put the information on Twitter Thursday afternoon.
The user, known simply as Kopite7kimi, states that not only will the limiter be coming, but another detail of the card has changed. Originally planned to have 20GB GDDR6X memory on a 320-bit memory bus, it appears the memory amount has been reduced.
The final design of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will have 12GB GDDR6X VRAM on a 384-bit bus. Though half the size of the RTX 3090, the bus size is the same. That will allow memory clock speeds of up to 19 Gbps, just .5 lower than the RTX 3090.
It will have 12G 19Gbps VRAM and an ETH mining nerf too.

Nvidia is fighting crypto mining
With the RTX 3060 and RTX 3080 Ti both including the Ethereum hash limiter, it should come as no surprise that Nvidia is targeting miners in a big way. The company is likely to include the limiter in all future RTX 30 Series graphics cards as a way to curb miners from buying the cards over those who are looking for high-powered gaming performance.
Rumored Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Specs | |
---|---|
Architecture | Ampere |
GPU | GA102 |
CUDA Cores | 10240 |
Tensors/TMUs | 320 |
Memory | 12 GB GDDR6X |
Memory Bus | 384-bit |
Memory Clock | 19 Gbps |
Bandwidth | 864 GB/s |
Nvidia is releasing mining-specific GPUs later this year to keep that community happy. Though, if stock issues arise with those cards later on, miners may still look at grabbing a first-launch RTX 30 series card without the limiter. They may even decide to suck it up and mine with the limiter in place while the community almost certainly attempts to find a workaround.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is expected to be announced in the coming weeks and launch in April. However, after initially being set for a January 2021 launch, it could be delayed once again prior to an official reveal.
As always, take any rumors with a grain of salt no matter how reliable the source has been. Until an announcement comes from Nvidia regarding both new graphics cards and crypto mining, things are always subject to change with.
