A new trailer for The Suicide Squad shows lots of new footage of Polka-Dot Man, TDK, and the rest of the eclectic supervillain roster. The film, which is part-sequel and part-reboot to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, features an ensemble cast of DC characters including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Some of those stars are reprising their roles from Ayer’s film, while others are brand-new to the DCEU.
The first trailer for The Suicide Squad gave a good look at the film’s R-rated action-comedy stylings. Superhero dark comedy approach has worked incredibly well in recent years for the Ryan Reynolds-led Deadpool films, and Warner Bros. will hope to catch some of that same success with James Gunn’s upcoming film. There’s undoubtedly some visible pedigree from Guardians of the Galaxy as well, and the result looks incredibly promising.
James Gunn has now shared a new trailer for The Suicide Squad, which includes a lot of new footage for some of the supporting characters like Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), TDK (Nathan Fillion), and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). Since it’s not a red-band trailer, the tone is slightly different from the first, but it still carries the same strong style. There’re new songs, new jokes, and new looks at the battle against Starro. Watch the new trailer for The Suicide Squad below.
Although it’s April Fool’s, the only joke here is on the supervillains who agreed to work for Amanda Waller. Brand new #TheSuicideSquad trailer which dropped last night exclusively in theaters! Meet us in theaters August 6! pic.twitter.com/FwbtANOXEX

Part of the fun of The Suicide Squad is that Gunn is bringing previously minor, sillier characters to the forefront of the story. Polka-Dot Man, Savant, Weasel, Blackguard, and Ratcatcher aren’t exactly household names, even among comics fans. Fillion’s TDK, whose real name is Floyd Belkin, is a very minor DC character called Splitter, whose strange superpowers – seen in the new trailer – make his limbs fall off. It’s not exactly the type of crew that usually gets assembled for major blockbusters, but it’s undoubtedly a fun deviation from the norm.
In that way, Gunn’s Suicide Squad isn’t so far off from his MCU Guardians of the Galaxy films. Marvel had stuck with better-known heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America for its early films, and introducing smaller names like Groot and Rocket Racoon was risky. However, the experiment paid off in the end, yielding two of the most beloved MCU films to date. With luck, the DCEU can find a similar level of success when The Suicide Squad releases on August 6.
