The constraints of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have certainly changed the day-to-day reality of being a working royal. In-person appearances have been shifted to remote meet-ups, and even the highest ranking royals have had to learn their way around a video call (Zoom decorum notwithstanding). Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton have been no exception, using video calls to chat with everyone from teachers to frontline workers in order to show their appreciation and support their patronages during the pandemic.
Naturally, with all of that practice, the Duchess of Cambridge has become a regular pro at perfecting her look for virtual engagements, sometimes even changing outfits between calls to keep her fashion fresh. Earlier this week, she had the chance to show off her skills again, when she donned a black and white polka dot blouse (a royal go-to pattern) and minimalist gold hoop earrings for a video call for the mental health messaging service Shout 85258.
For the call, Kate and William spoke with a family whose 12-year-old son was helped through a mental health crisis by the service, which offers text messaging support throughout the UK for those struggling with mental health issues like anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. The service, which has reportedly helped 265,000 texters thus far, was developed with a £2m grant from the Royal Foundation as a legacy of the Heads Together campaign, originally founded by the Cambridges and Prince Harry.
“This service is doing exactly what we hoped it would, which is be there for families in crisis,” William said during the call. “It’s nice to be able to speak to you directly and hear about what has gone on here, how it has helped you, and really what it has done.”
